KENYA AT 50: A HUGE MILE STONE TO BE PROUD OF.

Kenya was the other day marking its half centenary celebrations in honor of all heroes and heroines who fore go torment and all types of callous exploitations to usher in independence from the Colonialists.

Kenya’s history was repeated with this time Jamuhuri Day celebrations alluding to those of 1963. President Uhuru Kenyatta in the wake of today walked into his father’s footsteps by hoisting the Kenyan flag at Uhuru Gardens and thereafter, issued a speech full of assurance that indeed our forefathers garnered the sovereignty and independence we boast of.
Some time back in 1963, Kenyans took position at the same venue to witness a physical deliberation from oppression by the arrogant colonial rule where the Union Jack was lowered and the Kenyan flag hoisted by the then Prime Minister, Jomo Kenyatta.
The journey to independence was grave and filled with all types of atrocities from the white man. The force behind the struggle for Independence yielded from the affliction that Africans had endured from the Colonial rule.
We developed a common viewpoint and collectively, initiated the white man’s return to his country.
Soon after, installation of Jomo Kenyatta as our first President, we attained what we had yearned for some while back – Freedom.
During Jomo’s reign, all reclaimed land was issued back to the populace. His Government was now tasked to proceed with what the colonial regime had left behind including absorption of their own constitution.
Greed, corruption amongst other vices did not take too long to be born in our native Kenya. There was the Anglo leasing then came the Golden berg where senior officials in Moi’s and Kibaki’s Governments had embezzled Public funds out of greed and selfishness. Nothing up to date has been done to the perpetrators of the two scandals.
Impunity has been on the rise with politicians legislating laws and decrees that favor them and edge out the common mwananchi from the long run of survival.
Commissions have been set up to probe into key issues affecting the society like Insecurity. Those appointed to head them end up paving way for other commissions to investigate their code of conduct after failure to achieve. It’s a vicious cycle.
Democracy, a necessity to invention and innovation has been subjected to partial elimination, a move which has led to the death of viable ideologies. Recently, the draconian media bill which imposes lump sum fines on cases of misreporting among Journalists was unanimously voted for by the 11th Parliament and given an end point with the President assenting to it despite his earlier assurance to protect Media freedom.
With all these in play, the hoi polloi views Kenya at 50 Celebrations as a parody and a jubilation of inhuman vices perpetrated by some of our current leaders in power.
My crystal ball tells me that, it’s only President Kenyatta who is capable of diverging the common man's school of thought to positivity by implementing what is right and just.
